The Art of Metalsmithing
Learn the Art of Metalsmithing at NYC Jewelry Lab
with Carolina Iwanow
Our classes are fully hands-on, highly personalized, and open to students of all levels. You will learn in a professional jewelry studio and gain confidence using jewelry tools, equipment, and both traditional and contemporary metalsmithing techniques.
What You Will Learn
Students will learn how to design jewelry, how to think and see as a jeweler, and how to work skillfully with metal through a wide range of fundamental and advanced techniques, including:
Sawing, filing, forming, joining, and soldering
Wax carving
Introduction to gemstones
Multiple stone-setting techniques
Chain making
Granulation
Reticulation
Stone inlay
Riveting
Hinges and cold connections
Findings
Burnishing
Hand stamping
Chasing and repoussΓ©
Embossing
Cold enamel
Ring sizing
Matt finishing, polishing, sanding
High-end surface finishes
Forming and folding
Marriage of metals
Texturing techniques
Recycling and sustainable bench practices
Professional manufacturing tips and considerations
All these techniques are practiced directly in class, with close guidance.
Jewelry Design & Creative Development
Students will also learn the fundamentals of jewelry design, including basic drawing techniques and conceptual development.
You will be encouraged to create, experiment, play, and explore in order to develop your own jewelry pieces β and eventually, your own personal jewelry collection.
Studio & Materials
A fully equipped jewelry studio and all the jewelry tools needed are provided for all the in-person classes.
Materials for the first class are included. Beginning with the second class, students have bring their own materials. You will receive an email with a full materials list, supplier links, and additional jewelry resources after the first class.
How Enrollment Works
You may contact us before booking to confirm availability, understand how the classes work, review the Rescheduling Policy, and see the current class schedule and available time slots.
Or, you may book directly, and you will receive an email with all class information, the Rescheduling Policy, and the full schedule after booking.
You will select one weekly class time and keep the same day and time each week.
All classes must be taken consecutively.
Classes fill up quickly, so we recommend reserving your spot early.
Registration is first come, first served.
Studio Closure Notice
π The studio will be closed from November 26th, 2025.
π’ Classes will resume on January 26th, 2026.
Class Duration
All in-person group classes last 3 hours.
Safety & Studio Standards
At NYC Jewelry Lab, safety is a priority, and we are a proudly green jewelry studio.
We do NOT use hazardous acids.
