Lost Wax Carving Fundamentals I - Ring Making - 2 Day Intensive Workshop
Learn the ancient art of lost-wax carving through expert instruction in a professional jewelry studio environment.
CREATE YOUR OWN WAX-CARVED RING
Step into the mesmerizing world of lost-wax carving—an ancient technique where material and imagination come together to create something truly enduring.
Over the course of this immersive experience, you will design and sculpt your own ring in wax using traditional tools and techniques. Your piece will then be cast into metal and brought to life through professional finishing methods.
DAY 1
• Learn the fundamentals of subtractive wax carving for ring making
– Introduction to jeweler’s wax types and their properties
– Understanding essential wax tools and how to use them
– Subtractive vs. additive techniques in wax carving
– How to accurately determine ring size before carving, based on your design
– Techniques forcutting and filing wax
– How to use thedivider for precise measurements
– How totaper and shape the ring form
– Ring sizing techniques directly in wax
– Subtractive carving methods to develop form and structure
– How torepair and refine waxif breakage occurs
• Sculpt your ring fromhard jeweler’s waxusing professional tools, developing form, proportion, and surface
• Prepare your finished wax model for casting, ensuring it is structurally and technically ready for its transformation into metal
Once your wax ring is complete, you will bring it to our trusted casting partner in NYC’sDiamond District, where it will be cast in your chosen metal:
brass, rose brass, white brass, or sterling silver
(Casting time: approximately 2–4 days)
DAY 2 —
• Learn the essential metalworking tools and finishing processes to transform your cast piece into a high-end finished ring
– How to remove and cut the sprue
– Techniques for filing and refining metal surfaces
– How to restore and perfect the circular ring shape
• Learn core metalsmithing finishing techniques
– How to use the flex shaft for pre-polishing and surface refinement
– How to polish using professional power tools
– How to clean and prepare the metal surface for a flawless finish
You will leave with a fully finished ring—crafted entirely by you.
THE ATELIER EXPERIENCE
Hosted at NYC Jewelry Lab, this workshop takes place in a fully equipped, professional jewelry studio in Williamsburg.
You will be immersed in:
• A true atelier environment
• Professional tools and materials
• Personalized guidance
• A creative and inspiring atmosphere with music and beverages.
WHO THIS IS FOR
• Beginners (no experience needed)
• Creatives seeking a meaningful, hands-on experience
• Those curious about wax carving and metalsmithing.
• Anyone who wants to create a fine jewelry piece
-Workshop Size: Minimum 2 students — Maximum 8 students
